The Atkins and South Beach Effects on Junk Foods

South Beach and Atkins Dump on Twinkies

Which other companies are next to file for bankruptcy? Interstate Bakeries Corporation is the maker of lunchbox stables wonder Bread and Twinkies. The corporation has been going through a lot of hardship since U.S. consumers have been informed and aware of the consequences of a diet rich in low-protein and high carb. By filing chapter 11, the company hopes to restructure and continue to make more of those twinkies and breads. As long as the high-protein, low-carb diets are popular, Interstate Bakeries may not stand a chance.

Is it time that companies that create junk food come to the judgement table? Many of these companies did not realize what they were putting into the body of their favorite consumers. They were getting them so fat that they die of clogged arteries and other diseases. Twinkies, who is going to regret them? Now these companies are taking a second look at their line of products because their bottom line is suffering. A dark hole is being dug in the books. The comapny said it's going to continue to operate its bakeries, stores and distribution centers. Now if they change to a constant line of products that promotes health over profit, they'll see the profits. It's unfortunate that many of the employers who labored for many years may go without a job if there's a layoff.

Are the beverage companies going to go the Twinkies maker's way? Insterstate Bakeries suffers because more and more Americans are tired of the obesity epidemic. Too many fat kids are eating and drinking to . Too many calories in these "Big gulp" drinks. Too many large containers and French Fries are around. It's time for a return to home-cooked meals. It's time to eat simple and organic. It may be time we care about what goes inside our bodies. We tend to care more about what we wear, drive than what goes into our belly. U.S. consumers, scared by South Beach and Atkins are indicating their priority with their wallet. They are saying, "let's take a break with Twinkies and Wonder Breads." Insterstate Bakeries shareholders are seeing the values of their stock go down. It's an eye opener for all businesses.

Eleni's Thoughts About Greece
Topic: USA/World_Trips

Greece's Hotel Greca

Here are a few thoughts about this country and its people: HOTEL GRECA is continuing to give great service to folks who visit Athena. The morning manager and bookeeper is Yiannis. Every morning when I come down to the reception lobby he is playing card games on the computer (that is the only program that this computer has!) and he, of course is smoking. He can speak at least 5 languages-Greek, English, French, German, Spanish. He is a very kind person but has an intention tremour that makes his writing a bit difficult to read.

The afternoon manager is Spiro-a very happy fellow and a very expressive personality who is married and has one daughter, accountant, who was married for 2 years-no children. Spiro is very worried about her because she has indicated that she is afraid to attempt marriage again. He is very concerned about Thea Maria's health and advises her when he thinks she is too tired togo some place she is considering. Thoma is the night manager and he is married man with 3 children from 12-19. He spends lots of time with them when he is not playing tennis. He is a soft spoken man who hasan easy way about him.

Athena is the maid who cleans all of the room in HOTEL GRECA! She is Roumanian and her husband who is Russian was arrested yesterday because he was born in Russia and doesn't have the proper "papers." She has been making and receiving many phone calls trying to find an attorney who specializes in these affairs.

All 3 of the managers work 7 days per week and are all retired from previous jobs. Many people here retire at age 55to release their jobs for the youth. Most of the young people in their 20s have finished the University but there are no jobs available for them. Some of the people here are abupt in their manner because I believe that they suffer from sleep deprivation. Athens is a night city. People don't go to sleep until 2-3 am but they take an afternoon nap of about 2 hours. This would really be compatible with my body clock. I am able to stay up until midnight but not much later.

Last night was my first shift with the Paralympics. I worked from 4 until 8:30 welcoming people at the gate and then watch the dress rehearsal for the Opening Ceremonies-beautiful. I highly recommend watching it on TV. I hope it is carried in the U.S. There are 120 countries represented-the most that have ever attended the Parolympics which has been in existence for about 12 years. To make it more accessible to more people they did not ask for an entrance fee. The opening ceremonies are sold out! Because of the success of the Olympics I believe that more people will attend the Paralympics than they expected. Hopefully this will make up for some of the debt incurred because so many people didn't attend because of the fear propaganda especially in England and the USA.

Santorini was everything we had expected and then some. Our hotel with breakfast included was centrally located in the capitol city of Fira. Chris and I took a a 7 hour archeological tour of the island which is a volcano. There are hotels on the side of the volcano with magnificent views. The sunset into the sea is beautiful. The fresh fish is delicious. We met an iconographer working in the large church. He paints beautiful images of the saints. I took a dip into the sea at the red (iron causes the redness) beach. Wines are delicious. Many grapes and fig trees. Rai sins were drying on the ground. We attended a concert featuring a quartet from Prague. Flute, violin, cello and piano-many nice selections and they ended with excerts from Bernstein's WEST SIDE STORY." What a treat!!!

This was part of a series of summer concerts created by Athena Capodistriou, pianist. She was there and introduced the quartet. During intermission we were treated to cheese, wine and bread cubes. The catamaran ride was 5 hours to Santorini. Movies on board, gift shop and snack bar with crunchy delicious spanakopita (spinach & feta pie.) It is like a plane ride with stewardesses who are very helpful and polite.

More later.

Greece: Motherland, Eleni's Journey Continues Beyond Olypic Flames
Mood:  happy

Yia sas olous (To everyone's health):
It has been some time since I wrote to you but my life has been a whirlwind of activity. Aaaaabout a week ago Chris and I were taken my Cousin Dr. Niko along with Stavros (Chris'attorney cousin from Maryland) to dinner and then to a dance party at the GENE KELLEY DANCE STUDIO. Niko's daughter married the owner of 5 of these dance studios-Aris. We met so many of their friends and participated in Latin American dances and Greek dances-what a ball I had! I even got to dance with some of the intructors.

I attended a performance of the National Athens Philharmonic orchestra and the 100 voice chorus performing CARMINA BURANA. I invited Thea Maria, Niko, his significant other-Mary, Costa and Fifi Athanassiadis. It was magnificent, performed at the ancient Herod Atticus Theatre.

We were in Limni, Evia, where my parents were born for 4 days. Our good friends,Costas and Fifi let us ride with them from Athena to Limni. Costas and Fifi and our friends from Fresno-Harry and Polly Costis also came to Limni to attend the Panigiri (annual festival celebrating the birth of Mother Mary).

Chris and I were privileged to stay with my lst cousin Tula and Arnold Prescott in their lovely home in Limni overlooking the thalassa (sea.) Tula's mother and my father were siblings. Tula and Arnold live in London most of the year but they have a home in Athena and one in Limni. "These people really know how to live life."

I met with the mayor of Limni as my lst cousin Sotiris Tagara, who was mayor of Limni 1975-77 insisted that themayor should meet me-LOCAL GIRL MADE GOOD. Then he took me to meet the local priest, Pappakosta. He is a very kind person and he took me in is car to show me where the town is building a facility for elderly folks. On the way he told me that he has 5 children-the 5th one has Down Syndrome born when his wife was 37 years old.

The child is now 12 and I saw him marching in the parade-litania through the streets of Limni-a procession that is held where the family who offered the largest donation (this year-1000 euros) were privileged to carry the icon in the procession.Tula and Arnold had us all over for a delicious brunch one day and the evening before we left to return to Athena my lst cousin, Niko Rotous hosted a delicious dinner for 16 of my relatives and Costa and Fifi in a wonderful fish restaurant just north fo Limni. We ate and ate and ate and sang and danced after dinner. Chris and I are now inSantorini. Will write more later.

Thanks.... for sending that news story to me and all of my and your friends. What an experience. The Greek are surprised that I would come all this way to volunteer to make their Games successful. Great PR for volunteerism which is really a new word in the Greek language.

I have an invitation to visit Brazil from a young man I met who is living at the hotel. You never know, some day. Eleni

Hi gang!

I'm getting into the routine now. I am scheduled to work 6-8 hours every day and have every 6th day off. I have 3 different shifts: 5 a.m. - 1 pm. or 11 am. - 6 pm or 5 pm. to 1 am. I must admit, though, that after arriving and checking in to get my lunch ticket, I wait for1-2 hours before I am assigned a specific duty. Today I helped at the West gate entrance, checking people's tickets to make sure they came on the right date and to the right venue. Then I helped them go through security. Our instructions are to be very polite and helpful. All of the volunteers are very nice to everyone. They check with me frequently to make sure I am not tired standing and they supply me with as much cold bottled water as I want.

The importantness of cleanliness is stressed. They are constantly cleaning, sweeping both manually and on small golf cart type devices with brushes that automatically clean. THere is this little cart that they drive that has 2 smiling faces on the front that says it makes people happy when the environment is clean.

Each day I receive a pamphlet: "HEALTH INFORMATIN FOR VISITORS TO GREECE" It has 3 sections: "Gastroenteritis-Traveler's diarrhea-foodborne diseases - "Airborne diseases" and "Sexually transmitted and bloodborne diseases." It is written in English and in Greek as are most pamphlets.

One I picked up yesterday was regarding what people should do when the temperature is very hot: Wear light colored loosse clothing made of cotton or linen, wear a hat with a large bill, wear sunglasses, Put on sun block at least an SPF of 15, drink water often, shower frequently with cool water, avoid alcohol.

Hi everyone! My enthusiasm has still not diminished one iota. On Sunday my shift was from noon to 5:30. Then I asked one of the Supers if I could help usher folks into the stadium. She said OK so "I was in!" What a wonderful experience-the sites were breath-taking, the Greek dancing and music were great! The extinguishing of the Olympic Torch, the speech by the Olympic committee chairman; all was great.

Then the volunteers and the performers had a party and what did they do? Dance Greek!!!! accompanied by the lute and drums. Now everything is settling back and I am anxiously awaiting for the start of the Paralympics on Sept. !9. 2 days ago I was invited by Dr. John and Sophia Evrigenis from Sacramento to spend a night with them at Loutraki a resort area 1 hour from Athens. Beautiful. Rode the bus down the brand new road with tunnels. Had a swim in the clear warm thallassa (sea).

Tonight I have been invited to a reception for Rip Kastaris at The ministry of Foreign Affairs.

See you... Eleni

2004 Athens Olympics Journal by Eleni or Dr. Helen R.

My dear Friends:

What an adventure!!! I have met so many great people from all over the world! This morning, I met a man born in Bangladesh who lives in Athens and is President of the HELLENIC COMMUNITY OF FOREIGN PEOPLE & IMMIGRANTS. Farid A. He invited me and my friends to have coffee and tiropeta. The K. family is staying at my hotel. He says that the only way to have peace in the world is to vote for John Kerry! "With that peace will come....."

I will try to find a t-shirt with ITS ALL GREEK TO ME written on it but most of the t-shirts have the greek flag on them and/or "Athena 2004, OLympics".

Last night I attended a performance at the Herod Attica Theatre at the base of the Acropolis. Being a volunteer I was told that I could get free tickets. 4 tickets were available for each person. I asked if I could get 4 more and I got them under Thea Maria's(hereafter referred to as TM) name.

I asked the Athanassiadis to come but they had already invited someone to dinner. I asked Dr. Nikos T. and his girlfriend, Maro, to come but Nikos was seeing patients last night. Therefore I invited TM who was so excited to come, my first cousin, Litsa M., Lena M., who is married to Litsa's son, Theophanis, and Lena's oldest daughter, Sofia, 8 yr old.

I also invited Sofia and Genti P. I met them at a coffee house. Sofia is completing her studies as a Maritime Transport Economist. Her husband, Genti, is a violinist in the Athens Orchestra and has a BA degree in music. They gave me a CD with several classical compositions on it. Genti is Greek/Roumanian. They are both wonderful beautifull people. So kind and sweet.

Now, let's get back to the games

Last night the Olympic Torch was returned to the Acropolis inAthens!!! Carl Lewis was carrying it. It was given to the mayor of Athens, Dora Bacogiannis, and Ioanna Daskalakis Angelopoulou, the chairman of the Athens Olympic Games at the GREAT ANCIENT HEROD ATTICUS THEATRE. (It appears that women are responsible for the success that Greece has had in bringing the Olympic Games to Athens.) Formal ceremonies were held with other previous Olympic Medal winners present. We were able to see all of these festivities projected on a large screen in the Herold Atticus Theatre. King Constantine and his wife were also there. Even though he has no power, the Greek people still love honor and respect him.

Then the Philharmonic Orchestra of Patras played (mostly string players with a trumpet solo) 4 compositions. Then Markopulos, classic pianist, performed with the orchestra on a large grand piano. TM and I were able to sit with the Special Needs people because TM cannot walk without my holding her arm.

We had GREAT SEATS. I have it all on my camcorder so you can see it when I return. Tonight, Dr. Nikos Tsopelas has invited me and other friends to his home in EKALI (1 hr. away) to watch the Opening Ceremonies on his large screen. I will remain there overnight.

I begin my duty on Saturday, from 6 pm to 1 am. My job will be to welcome people and help them fiknd their way arround and answer questions. My venue is SPECTATOR SERVICES and I have been assigned to the Central Gate. We are called the FACE OF THE GAMES. We are told to be very polite and helpful to everyone. If they are upset and anxious, we should do our best to calm them down .

I can hardly wait for my shift to begin. I will be working every day 7-8 hours/day but different hours every day. I have 1 day off every 5 days. On Sunday, August 14 I will work from 11:30 am to 5:30 pm.

My friends from USA, Jeannine R. (retired attorney) and husband, Jim, teaches Sociology at FCC have arrived and live in a flat in a suburb, N. I.. Gudo H., nutritionist and husband Ken clinical psychologist, who teaches at FCC will arrive tonight at 11 pm.

More later, Me polli agapi, Eleni

Getting To Know Our Neighbors:
Nat's Creativity Seen All Around His Residence

A grown man who spends his time doing what he likes the most finds artistic freedom and happiness in the end. A self-taught artist, Nat Benavides is one of these down-to-earth people that anybody would like to have as a neighbor. There is no dull moment for him. His creativity leads to the production of various art works that he displays at his residence in Selma, CA. Among his friends and relatives, he is known as "Tivo." From his son, Erik to his niece, Perla, everyone who comes in contact with him will agree that Tivo's artistic talent and attitude are what's keeping him going in good and bad times. For example, when his beloved wife, Juanita, got into a car accident on her way to work, the couple ended up losing everything during the recovery. That's how they got relocated to their current Selma residence. Juanita is barely able to walk now. Suffering from cataract which makes him nearly blind, Tivo himself is going to have a surgery soon according to Erik.

In the midst of all the ups and downs of life, Tivo's art has never been better. Yet, very few people other than his family members and close relatives know about his artistic gift. The fact that he does not get commissioned work and make sales doesn't keep him from dedicating his precious time to his work. All he has been doing is to keep painting, sculpting and creating new art works, trinkets and trellis. Everyone who knows Nat knows that he is a jack of all trades. He has enough art pieces to supply any tourist spot or souvenir store. He is only a phone call away. Now with his son's e-mail address, he can be reached via e-mail.

Ever since he was a young boy, he knew what he wanted to do. He dreamed about attending art school on a scholarship and becoming an artist. He entered one of his paintings into a competition which he won. That was not enough. Since he was only 16 years old, his father had to give him permission to attend the art school. "The needs of the family appeared to come first," said his son. Tivo's parents, Natividad B. Rodriguez and Catalina L. Hernandez, were hard-working migrant workers who traveled between Arizona, Mexico, Texas and California.

When Perla showed me the pictures of this giant papier mache gorilla sitting in his yard, I could not pass up the chance of taking one of my sons to check it out. What we found was a trove of treasures scattered all around his residence. Tivo defines what it takes to beautify one's property. From his front porch, you can see the birds, ducks, cat, crocodiles, vine-covered thorn-crowned head of Jesus-Christ sculpture he designed over the years. Tivo is a curious man whose thirst for knowledge takes him to local libraries where he does his research. He speaks some French, works on cars, has a newly obtained certificate in cabling/Networking systems. He is currently working on a lion. "It's going to be huge," he said. "You need to come back to see it." He also has an AS degree.

Our hope is that a larger audience will get exposed to his works which they'll appreciate enough to place an order. He can fill this empty corner of your front and back yard with great art. Your porch does not have to be so bare. From his old barn, he can create owl boxes, plant holders and flower pots. It's worth noting that he has a extensive knowledge of the virtues of plants and leaves. He is the repository of knowledge passed down from his grandparents and ancestors. "Whenever I get sick, my dad tells me what to take," said Erik as he reminisced over the fond memories of the large Cessna that his father built for him when he was a child. "I could even sit in it. It was so huge." Tivo works with watercolor, oil, acryclic, charcoal, and draws portraits too.

If you would like to purchase any of Tivo's art works, e-mail Eric at ex27@hotmail.com. Get ready to appreciate them. Enjoy Tivo's creations.

From Helen to Eleni As Seen On NBCOlympics
Mood:  celebratory
Topic: OLYMPICS_JOURNAL

The following is an excerpt from Deirdre's Olympic Diary:

"'Helen' is how her friends in Fresno and patients at the local hospital where she was a pediatrician know her. But, like Madonna, Helen has changed her name and prefers to be called "Eleni." Unlike Madonna, there's a decent reason for the moniker mystique. Eleni is Greek for Helen. Eleni is a 70-year-old recently retired Fresno pediatrician who is living out a lifelong dream. The dream was not to work at the Olympics. The dream was for Helen to do something just for Helen, sorry, Eleni. Eleni spent her life taking care of a family and taking care of patients. Now, she's taking care of herself."

Our Own Helen or Eleni Finds Joy and Herself Again in Athens

Thea Maria is so proud of me.

Watch NBC TODAY everyday. You may see me on it. They tape here everyday from 2-5 pm at the main stadium where I am assigned. I got Katy, Matt and Al to autograph my hat. I will try to get them to interview me-FAT CHANCE!!! You may see me in the crowd inb front of the studio.

Dr. Nikos said that the Greeks here are afraid that there will be a great depression when the Olympics end because many people have been hired to construct the venues and they will all be unemployed. It seems to me that the Greeks needed this to put some fire under them so they can produce this magnificent happening. They have improved their transportation system tremendously. They have cleaned the environment and have planted many new trees and bushes.

Gudo and her husband Ken did the ACROPOLIS together today and then were invited to have lunch with Thea Maria at the DYONISUS RESTAURANT with a GREAT VIEW of the ACROPOLIS.

Awesome!!!!

Love from wonderful ATHENS!!!!

Thanks, Andy for the research for Sofia and Genti. I will give them a copy of your e-mail.

Costco Auto Program: Consumer Gets Shorthanded at Costco Tire Center
Topic: Business_Technology

Costco shopppers and consumers, help me redress a wrong caused by Costco. If one of us gets ripped off or suffers, all of us will some day suffer!

I had been shopping around for a new car. I thought it would be a good idea to check the Costco Auto program. My wife concurred. After all, her sister and in-laws, their friends and she have been members of this organization for a very long time. Why not trust a firm that makes shopping so easy for one's family? We do receive the Costco Auto magazine every month. We keep looking for the best deals we can find. After various contacts with the local dealerships, we decided to compare their offerings with the price offered by the Costco program. In the meantime, we continued to do our homework. That's a recommendation that nobody should take lightly. We found out that the Costco price is summarized as the dealer invoice plus $500. Now, if you are dealing with a crooked dealer, you may expect some other fees. We were interested in a 2004 Nissan Maxima SE. After using the Nissan Quest without any problems, we became stuck on the brand. Why not buy another Nissan after all? However, even with the Costco's reputation of valuing its customers, a shopper should always be on his/her guard. The following is my experience with the Costco Auto shop and tire and service department.

After deciding to postpone the purchase of the car, we decided to change all four tires on the Honda. The store was running a deal on the Michelin, BF Goodrich and Bridgestone tires. We bought the 4 new tires for close to $400.00, signed the papers, turned in our keys and waited about 3 hours before returning to the store to pick up the car. As we were leaving the car, there were no mentions of dings, scratches and dents on the car. In fact, we left the car with any of the dents and scratches we later found. Beware of the following: Whether you agree there are dents on your car or not, you'd have to agree with their observation to start with. When and if they do it in your absence, that's like a shot in the back. Costco is more interested in covering their back than providing you with satisfaction and customer care. That I'll find out later.

Before going back to the Costco Tire section, we called them to make sure that the installation was complete. We were thinking that a two-hour timeframe was enough time for them to mount the tire. We were wrong. It was a Saturday after a major holiday. Every Costco member showed up to get their work done. We had to wait 1 more hour. When it was time to retrieve the car, my wife dropped me off. I waited a few minutes before the employee could print the paperwork and hand me my keys. While I was talking to him, my wife waited for me by my Honda. That's when she discovered the fresh dents, scratches and dings on the rear of the car. I informed the employee of my wife's findings. He accompanied me to the parking lot where the car was parked. My wife, the employee and I noticed that the car was not properly parked (meaning between the lot). The employee who completed the installation of the tires did not park the car properly. That opened the door to anybody who wanted to park close to my car to put the dents, dings and scratches there. Bear in my mind up to this point, Costco was supposed to be responsible for my car. For up to 4 hours, they were in complete possession of the vehicle!

Costco is not willing to take responsibility for the damage

What can a small guy do to a giant we can't live without?

The Costco clerk asked me whether I wanted to file a claim. I followed him to the Tire section. He asked me for a copy of my receipt which did not have any mentions of dents, scratches and dings. He disappeared for what seemed to be a good 15 minutes to make copies of my receipt. When he came back, I noticed the presence of dents, dings and scratches on the form. The words must have been typewritten because some of the letters were on top of the remark words in the pre-existing empty box. When the clerk finally said that these dings were observed by the tire-mounting employee, I said I did not believe him. I expressed to him my dissatisfaction. I bid him farewell knowing that he did his best to protect his company. After all, the damage was caused during his shift. By the time I made it back to my car, my wife had already gone home to get our camera. She took some shots of the car in the position it was parked by the Costco employee.

The clerk gave me a claim form to fill out. When I was close to completing it, he realized it was the wrong form. He apologized and gave me the right one. Here I was filling out a new form. Unwilling to give me the name of the "Costco Wholesale Liability Insurance," he told me somebody would call me. An employee from the insurance company did give me a call and left me this 1-800-409-1099 ext. 15 . After a few days later, I called Josh Judge back at the same number. He was all defensive. He was covering the back of his company. He wanted to have proof. I could either e-mail him some pictures or send him the film pics via snail mail. Once the pictures were developed, we mailed them to him. In the meantime, we were communicating via e-mail. For a few weeks, I did not hear anything from Josh Judge. So I sent an e-mail to JJudge@costco.com to find out what was up. In case I was not available, I gave him my wife's number. For a number of days, neither my wife nor I heard from him. I told my wife to call him. All I wanted was for them to accept responsibility for the damage their employee caused to my car. They could pay to have it painted!

Costco only cares about its own profits, sends customers to hell! It offers customer service to get into our pockets

The company's reps will chase you around to get you to sign up with them. They'll give you incentives until they get you. Once that happens, they forget about you. If you think I didn't like the company all along, please read my other review. The company's practices tend to wake us up, consumers. How many of us are in the same situation? Yes, you can return any merchandise with no hassle. You can shop as much as you can pay. But the way its reps are treating the small guys likes us, consumers is not right.

Josh Judge examined the pictures and called my wife. "I will not pay you anything," he said to her.

The car you buy from them may be damaged during service! You're on your own! Shop At your own RISK!

David went against Goliath. This small fish that I am can't go against Costco! I need help from you, readers and consumers!

Let's band together, Costco consumers, so that arrogance does not triumph. Let's get together to make Costco do the right thing! Paying for my car to get a fresh layer of paint would not put a dent into their coffers.

Please e-mail or call Josh Judge to help a small guy like me! I only have the morale of my story and my words to correct a wrong.

Just ask me for help the next time you get wronged! I'll be there for you!

Please help, help, help! A Big Fish Wants To Swallow Me Alive! That's a rip-off!

Are customers always right? In this case, I know I am right. Please what you can to get their attention on this unresolved matter.
