Latin hip hop, Reggaeton: The Kings of the first Reggaeton Generation
Topic: Hip hop Music

Long before Don Omar, Daddy Yankee and Tego Calderon, lived Bob Marley who brought us the Reggae beat from the streets of his Kingston home. These days, young artists hailed from Puerto Rico are pushing the envelope. There is no doubt that Don Omar, Daddy Yankee and Tego Calderon are some of the most successful artists of the new genre.

What is Reggaeton?

It fuses everything from hip hop, salsa, dancehall to rock, samba, bomba and guaguanco. It is highly influenced by the American R&B and Soul. In some of the songs, the speak over may remind you of the Gospel influences. Tego Calderon says that Reggaeton needs this kind of musical promiscuity to have a true staying power.

These artists use English and Spanish to reach out to their audience. There is a huge U.S. market ready to absorb anything new. Tego's album, The Underdog/El Subestimado shows exactly what the new genre is all about. It remains very appealing to the young group which marketers want to attract so much. All of these new artists want new control. They do not want any label company to have all rights.

Just like Univision, the Latin Music industry can only grow. Hispanics are loyal to their music, telenovelas and culture. For them, the family is very important.

What are some of the images that come to your mind as you listen to a Reggaeton song?

DADDY YANKEE LYRICS

"Lo Que Paso, Paso"
Ah ah dale mambo (entre tu y yo)
Dale mambo (daddy)

Y si no tienes experiencia te enamora

mujer me janguea
Presea dale presea no dejes pa manana no dejes

mujer me janguea
Presea dale presea no dejes pa manana no dejes

(dile) yo soy soltero ma y tu preseas
Yo saco otra a bailar y tu preseas
Tu comes en too laos y me preseas
Si tienes dueno ma por que preseas

(vamos a dejar esto claro ya ok)

Lo que paso, paso entre tu y yo [x4]

Ah ah dale mambo [x2]
Luny tunes

Write about the influence of music, hip hop on consumers
Topic: Hip hop Music

Pay attention to the lyrics of this song, Grillz, and write about your observation of the consumer society in which we live. What messages are being conveyed here?

Reader/Writer/Listener's Notes:

Think about images, perception, consumerism, culture, class, nouveau-riches, affluence, influencers, trend-setters, fads, early adopters, hip hop influences, debate over crude lyrics, tweens and teens' expenses, stardom etc.

For this year's superbowl, Toyota ran an ad in English and Spanish. Advertisers are recognizing the buying power of the Hispanic population. They are being targeted directly. They can also reach them through music and other cultureal elements. Media artifacts abound.
